Information Obesity

We are living in information age. Left right up down we are literally wrapped by either some gadgets or tons of information.

The amount of data we are consuming these days is 'Huge'. From Global Internet Usage Facts and Statistics of 2013 the size of data available on the net has grown exponentially from 1993. Some say the size of the Internet seems to have crossed "The total number of words spoken by entire human race so far!" which is stored in a text format. (.txt extension).

14.3 Trillion - Webpages, live on the Internet
48 Billion - Webpages indexed by Google.Inc
14 Billion - Webpages indexed by Microsoft's Bing.
672 Exabytes - 672,000,000,000 Gigabytes (GB) of accessible data
Every day we create 2.5 quintillion (1018) bytes of data

Out of entire Human population which is about 7.1 Billion, 4.3 Billion people (4.354 billion approx.) used internet in 2013 182.567 Billion - E-mail traffic per day world-wide.
Have a look how much data is generated through social media tools?

People send more than 144.8 billion Email messages sent a day.
People and brands on Twitter send more than 340 million tweets a day.
People on Facebook share more than 684,000 bits of content a day.
People upload 72 hours (259,200 seconds) of new video to YouTube a minute.
Consumers spend $272,000 on Web shopping a day.
Google receives over 2 million search queries a minute.
Apple receives around 47,000 app downloads a minute.
Brands receive more than 34,000 Facebook ‘likes’a minute.

"The inflection point created by social media represents a permanent change in the nature of customer relationships," said Carolyn Heller Baird, CRM research lead for the IBM Institute for Business Value and the global director of the study. "Approximately 90 percent of all the real-time information being created today is unstructured data."

The main problem is unstructured data. I agree everything is in internet but how to reach to the point where I will be able to say ‘yes this is real knowledge, this is what I was looking for’. How to filter which information is junk and which one is real. Junk always come with flashier wrapping real food like fruits, vegetable, fish and raw meat they not necessary have to be well presented.

We have to ask ourselves whether we are consuming junk information or having fresh and real information, otherwise OBESITY is inevitable. This will be again another big pain for our race as it will screw us psychologically big time. Have a think.
